According to Luke 4:17 (KJV), Jesus came to “preach the gospel to the poor.” Jesus was under no great obligation to preach to the affluent. This book beautifully illustrates this great truth, and how God used a man named Steve Wright to reach the unreachable for Christ.

Mr. Wright reached out to the destitute in San Francisco’s Tenderloin district. His congregation was so unruly that no landlord would put up with this crowd for long. Each Sunday a ragtag bunch would come out for church, pushing their shopping cart buggies, cursing and fighting among themselves. Thieves, druggies, prostitutes and others were taught about Jesus and many were saved. I can really see Jesus at work in this ministry.

This book is a must read; it made me laugh, cheer, and let me know that God still loves everybody. It has made me a much better Christian.

Looking for a feel-good, tickle the ear kind of book? Then you probably do not want to read “The Descent to Compassion.” However, if you need to be challenged in your walk with Christ (and who doesn’t?), plus get to the heart of how far you are willing to obey the callings of God, then this is a must read for you! Follow along as Steve takes readers on his (and his family’s) journey from North Carolina, to California, to the center of the Tenderloin district in San Francisco to minister to the physically, emotionally, financially, and spiritually down-trodden. Take your time to read each passage slowly, allowing for the senses to take you on the journey with him, as Steve shares servanthood to the homeless, meeting their needs…just as God is meeting THEIR needs in the midst of it all. Written with a spirit of vulnerability and humility and spiced with dashes of humor, “The Descent to Compassion” will have the reader crying, laughing, and throughout the whole, thinking, “How can I be the one who does for Him, by doing for the least?” Read with a heart prepared to be changed.

This is a story of one family’s call into the “road less traveled”. The author takes you along for the ride and makes each story come to life, just as if the reader were experiencing these events first hand. Some very remarkable stories are shared through Wright’s 13 years of ministry in “the wrong side of the tracks” in San Francisco. The reader will be required to look into his/her own heart to see how they would have reacted. A great read and well worth the time.

I look forward to reading more from this author!

This book will open the heart to what must be done to reach into the hearts of the marginalized and disenfranchised here in America or even across this world. Pastor Steve Wright has written not a book but a model of earned and learned compassion. Each page of this book shows the heart of a family that wanted one thing, and that was to serve the Lord in the city of San Francisco that was filled with poverty and hurting people. As you read through the pages don’t be surprised if you reach for a napkin or hankerchief to wipe the tears that are streaming down your cheeks. That is how moving this book is. It is as though, you are walking through the Tenderloin area of San Francisco with Pastor Steve and his staff. This book is also challenging to all who have ever desired to live out loud “Compassion Ministry”. I look forward to the next book published by Pastor Steve Wright. Enjoy!

Straight to the heart.

I chose to read this book slowly and deliberately. Inside each chapter is not only the Author’s personal story….but every chapter also is filled with nuggets of wisdom, seeds of challenges and stories of real people. We live in a world filled with lost, dying and hurting individuals. Steve Wright shares beautifully his God-directed journey….leading to his “Descent to Compassion”…leaving the reader to ponder how to do the same. I highly recommend this book.

Years ago I heard about this church in San Francisco called the “Hot Dog Church”, it was a church that was ministering to people that were hungry and needy…the pastor was Steve Wright, and Descent into Compassion is the story of this church and ministry. While the story is great, the reality is greater! Steve Wright presents the reality that people are hurting, that people you would never think of often find themselves struggling. What he teaches us is that every person needs, Jesus, a human being to love and respect them, and a little help from a friend!

As I read the pages of this book I realized how easy it is to become comfortable in life, and especially in church, how easy it is to talk about the gospel without actually doing the gospel. Descent into Compassion is a compassionate reminder of the grace that God has shown each of us, and of how we too can show compassion to others in our daily lives. I highly recommend this book!

This was a book I could not put down. It’s very inspiring and should challenge anyone desiring to be a true follower of Jesus. To walk as He walked, loving as He loves is what the book portrays. I would encourage you to get it and let it touch your heart in a powerful way.
